In the early days of the new developments, telephones were a luxury, but slowly as more and more people got them telegraph poles sprung up in the streets. Those who had telephones became very popular and often had to get very strict with neighbours who came in to borrow the phone for gossip. Refrigerators were uncommon and other people's Sunday joint or ice-cream could appear unannounced, even if only a passing acquaintance. Early TV's were also popular, and often provided extra entertainment for gathered family and neighbours by filling the room with thick black smoke.
